“Mother of Dragons” Comet AKA The Devil Comet Visible In The Night Sky.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks also known as “MOTHER OF DRAGONS” comet or Devil Comet will reach its closest point to Earth in June 2024. After almost 71 years this comet is going to be visible again in 2024.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is named after two astronomers. This comet was first discovered by French astronomer Jean-Louis Pons (1761–1831) on July 12, 1812 using telescopes and lenses of his own design.

British-American astronomer William R. Brooks (1844–1921) observed the same comet during its return voyage through the inner solar system on September 2, 1883. 

It is a periodic comet of the Halley type that circles the Sun every 71 years. Its nucleus is around 30 kms in diameter, and it is well-known for its spectacular gas and dust eruptions that occur when it travels through the inner solar system. A link with the kappa-Draconids, a yearly meteor shower that is active from late November into December, has been established. Just like the other comets this comet is composed of an overall mixture of ice, dust and rocky material. The comet changes as it gets closer to the Sun, the ice inside becoming gas instead of solid.

Through this process, gas and particles are propelled from the comet’s surface, creating a broad cloud and a recognizable tail. This comet’s visible tail, which is sculpted and propelled by solar winds, indicates its course across space.

Even now, his accomplishment remains an unrivaled record. One of his most famous comet discoveries was on July 12, 1812, when he noticed a dim object in space that did not have the typical comet tail.

• William R. Brooks : On September 2, 1883, Anglo-American astronomer William R. Brooks, who had made an astounding 27 comet discoveries, unintentionally corroborated Pons’ earlier observations when he saw the same comet on its return journey through the inner solar system. Thought to be a brand-new find at first, it was quickly identified as the comet that Pons had seen 71 years earlier.
