The Archaeological Survey of India has begun drilling a passage into the Jagamohan, or assembly hall, of the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple to remove sand packed inside by the British over a century ago. Officials said a 6×5-foot passage is being drilled, after which the sand will be removed manually to protect the structure’s stability.  

A Century-Old Conservation Challenge

The Konark Sun Temple was filled with sand during the British era to stabilize the monument. Now, ASI is attempting to remove that sand through a controlled and technically sensitive process.

Drilling Begins at Jagamohan

According to The Indian Express, ASI’s technical team started drilling into the Jagamohan. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making every step of the operation highly sensitive.  

Manual Removal Planned

Once the passage through the western wall is completed, sand removal will begin manually. This reduces the risk of sudden structural stress and allows conservation experts to assess internal conditions gradually.
