CSK built a big total through Ayush Mhatre and a strong finish

Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 45 off 27 balls, and Sarfaraz Khan added a rapid 32 off just 12 deliveries, helping Chennai score 99 runs in the final 8.5 overs after Gaikwad’s dismissal. That late burst pushed CSK to 209/5, a total that looked highly competitive at Chepauk. 

For Punjab, Yuzvendra Chahal was the most economical major bowler, returning 1/21 in three overs, while Vijaykumar Vyshak took two important wickets. But overall, PBKS struggled to contain CSK’s batting once Mhatre settled and the finishing pair attacked.

Punjab’s chase began with fearless intent

Punjab’s reply could not have started much better. Priyansh Arya attacked immediately and blasted 39 off 11 balls, with three fours and four sixes. The official IPL report says PBKS raced to 55/0 in just four overs, and Arya alone had contributed 33 of those runs. That opening burst changed the shape of the chase by keeping the asking rate under control almost from the outset. 

Arya fell to Matt Henry at 61/1, but by then Punjab had already seized the momentum. Prabhsimran Singh then took on the stabilizing role and made 43 off 34 balls, anchoring the middle phase before being run out in the ninth over. His innings made sure Punjab did not lose structure after the explosive beginning. 

CSK briefly fought back, but PBKS held their nerve

The match did become tighter in the second half of the chase. The IPL report notes that Chennai pulled things back with a few controlled overs, and wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Nehal Wadhera off successive deliveries briefly reopened the contest. At that moment, Punjab still needed 24 runs from 17 balls. 

But Punjab stayed calm. Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh finished the chase without panic, taking PBKS home with 17 balls left and 5 wickets in hand. That finishing composure mattered almost as much as Arya’s early hitting, because big chases are often lost when teams panic after a mini-collapse. Punjab did not. 

For CSK, Matt Henry and Anshul Kamboj picked up two wickets each, but the bowling attack had a difficult night overall. Defending 209 at home and still losing with nearly three overs to spare will be a serious concern for Chennai.
