The 5G Spectrum Auction valued at INR 96000 crores is set to kick off on June 25, 2024 online. This is the 10th Auction which will be conducted online since 2010. The auction will commence on June 25 at 10 AM whose notice for inviting applications (NIA) was issued on 8th March, 2024. Read the news to know about the event in detail.
5G Spectrum Auction Highlights
- The 5G Spectrum Auction valued at INR 96,000 crores is set to kick off on June 25, 2024 at 10am through online mode.
- This is the 10th time an online auction has been conducted since 2010.
- Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are the three bidders for this auction.
- Reliance Jio has submitted the highest earnest money deposit amongst the three and has gained the highest bids for it.
- The rate of interest for the installment payments has also been increased.

What is this 5G Spectrum Auction?
- It is the process by which rights to use specific radio frequencies for telecommunication services are being sold by the Government of India to the bidders.
- Telecommunication companies bid against each other for the rights, the one giving the highest bid wins the rights.
- This is the 10th time an online bidding process is happening in India since 2010.
Details of the Spectrum
- The latest auction of 5G Airwaves is set to commence on Tuesday valued at Rs 96,000 crores.
- It is estimated that spectrum of around INR 12,500 crores will be sold at the auction.
- 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands in the frequencies will be auctioned by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
- The department excluded 600 MHz, 700 MHz bands. Reverse prices have also been increased by 12 percent and 8.9 percent for the 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands respectively.
- Prices of the bands or circles that saw demand in 2022 are increased by 11-14%.
- 3300 MHz and 26GHz bands are seen as the suitable bands for 5G services.
- Spectrum will be valid for 20 years. Telcos can lease, share, trade and surrender the spectrum after 10 years.
Payment Details of the Spectrum
- To save the interest cost, telcos can pay the full amount. 8.65% will be the interest rate in case the payment is made in installments, this interest rate is higher than the interest rate for the previous year which was 7.2%.
- In the installment option, the government will collect INR 1200 crores in the first year.
- Telecom Industry Body Cellular Operators Association of India Director General SP Kochhar said “The 5G spectrum auctions will ensure that even the most remote areas of our country gain access to high-speed internet, thereby fostering greater economic opportunities and social advancement. The auctions also symbolize our commitment to ‘Viksit Bharat’ and we are confident that the outcomes will lay a strong foundation for a prosperous and digitally empowered India,”
Who are the Bidders?
- Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are the top competitors for the spectrum.
- They look to spend Rs 15000 Crores on 4G and 5G bands.
- Three of the brands have together submitted an earnest money of INR 4350 Crores.
- Amongst them Reliance Jio has submitted INR 3000 crores, Bharti Airtel has submitted INR 1050 Crores and Vodafone Idea has submitted INR 300 Crores.
- Telcos can bid three to four times based upon their earnest money deposit.
- Reliance Jio can purchase spectrum of 1800 MHz while Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea may renew their existing holdings in frequency bands.
- Bharti Airtel has to renew its license in six circles, so it will be the biggest spender of this spectrum auction 2024. Those six circles are: Assam, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh East and West Bengal in various bands.
- Vodafone Idea looks to renew its holdings in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh West for 12 MHz in the 1800 MHz and 900 MHz
