Parker Solar Probe of NASA intends to ‘touch the Sun’ in 2024

On December 24, 2024, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is scheduled to blast by the sun at an incredible speed of 435,000 mph (195 km/s).

Parker Solar Probe, (prev. Solar Probe, Solar Probe Plus, or Solar Probe+) , is a NASA spacecraft that was launched in 2018 with the goal of gathering data about the Sun’s outer corona.

In the fiscal 2009 budget year, the project was announced. The project has a US$1.55 billion price tag. Launched on August 12, 2018, the spacecraft was conceived and built by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

In honor of physicist Eugene Newman Parker, professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, it became the first NASA spacecraft named after a live (at the time) individual.
