Suvendu Adhikari’s PA Shot Dead: Madhyamgram Killing Deepens West Bengal Political Tension

West Bengal’s already tense post-election atmosphere worsened after Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant and close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday night. Reports said motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted Rath’s vehicle near Doltala and opened fire at close range before fleeing. Another associate, Buddhadeb Bera, was critically injured in the attack. 

Adhikari described the killing as a “pre-planned murder” and alleged political conspiracy, but also appealed to supporters not to take the law into their own hands. Police have launched an investigation, while the incident has sharply escalated Bengal’s post-poll political crisis.

The attackers allegedly forced the car to stop and fired multiple rounds at point-blank range.  

Visuals from the scene showed damage to the vehicle, including bullet marks and cracked glass. Rath was reportedly hit by multiple bullets and later declared dead. Another aide, Buddhadeb Bera, was critically injured and taken for medical treatment.  

The timing of the attack has made the incident politically explosive. It occurred within 48 hours of the Assembly election verdict in which the BJP secured a historic victory in West Bengal. The state was already facing high tension because of Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign and allegations of election manipulation.
