Maha Shivratri is an important Hindu festival. This occasion is celebrated with great joy in the whole world including India. This festival is celebrated on the 14th day (Krishna Chaturdashi) of the Phalguna month of the Hindu calendar. During Mahashivratri, there is a tradition of Shiva devotees bringing Gangajal from the Ganga Ghat and offering it in temples.
The tradition of fasting and worshipping in temples is also observed. On the night of Mahashivratri, four pujas are performed in four parts, also known as Yamapuja. While Mahashivratri is indeed celebrated with great enthusiasm by all, there are some facts unknown to the majority. Let’s discuss them in this blog one by one.
Difference between Mahashivratri and Shivratri
Although only Shri Shiv Ji is worshipped in both Mahashivratri and Shivratri, both of these occasions are observed for the different accounts related to Shri Shiv Ji.
Mahashivratri
During Samundra Manthan (churning of the ocean), a very severe poison Halahala formed. The Halahala poison had the power to destroy the world. At that time, all the Deities and the demons became afraid and prayed to Shri Shankar Ji. Shankar Ji agreed to consume the poison. Then Shankar Ji beheld the poison in his throat because of which Shankar Ji turned blue.
Since then, he was named Neelkanth. On that night all the gods and goddesses worshipped Shankar Ji. For the same night, Shankar Ji also earned the name Mahadeva, and the day came to be known as Mahashivratri.
Shivratri
A number of folktales are prevalent for Shivratri. Some say that on this night, Shiv Shankar Ji married Mata Parvati of Mandakini region of the Himalayas. Therefore, according to the tale, that night came to be known as Shivratri.
■ While another folktale is so: One day Shankar Ji told the story of a hunter to Parvati Ji that a hunter was greatly influenced by the glory of Shankar. One night that hunter went into the forest. There was a lot of financial debt on him. So, he sat at a branch of a tree to hunt deer all night. He wanted to pay off his debt by selling the deer’s skin. He was waiting for a deer to die itself.
The hunter sitting on the tree branch saw a whole family of deer passing through the forest. He targeted them but could not shoot the arrow. His soul uttered a voice— By killing them, I can indeed repay my debt but I do not want to repay my debt by killing someone. The hunter’s heart melted and he went away. He was hungry and thirsty that night. It is said that his fast was also completed the same night. The same night began to be celebrated as Shivaratri.

The True Story & History of Mahashivratri
Shivling Puja
On page 11 of Shiv Purana Bhag-1 Vidhweshwar Samhita Adhyay 5, Nandikeshwar explained from where the worship of Shivalinga started:
■ In Sloka 27 to 30 of Adhyay 5, it is mentioned that once Brahma Ji and Vishnu Ji started fighting with each other. Then Kaal placed an illuminated Lingam (pillar-like structure; phallus) between them. Brahma and Vishnu stopped fighting and started looking for its beginning and end, but failed.
Story & History of Mahashivratri
Then, Jyoti Niranjan Kaal gave them his audience in Sadashiv form and said to Brahma Ji and Vishnu Ji— You both are not the Complete God. That’s why worship this Linga of mine. From the same day, the worship of Shivling became prevalent.
■ Story & History of Mahashivratri: It is worth noting that the practice of worshipping Linga during Mahashivaratri is considered the best practice by the naive devotees. It is a matter of great shame that the idol of Shivling in the temples shows a Linga (male genital) into a Yoni (female genital) and the misled devotees worship it. This Kaal misleads everyone like this. Kaal, who is the father of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, also known as Jyoti Niranjan, is asking Brahma and Vishnu to worship Linga as his son Shiva. In this way the Shivling Puja became prevalent. But there is no evidence in Vedas or Geeta Ji of worshipping it.

Shri Shiv Mahapurana on pages 100 to 105 and 110, Adhyay 6, 7, 8, 9 says that the Trinity was then endowed with three Gunas (qualities): Rajoguna to Brahma Ji, Satoguna to Vishnu Ji, and Tamoguna to Shankar Ji.
In Shrimad Devi Bhagavata Purana 3rd Skandh Adhyay 5, it is said that Shri Vishnu Ji while praising Durga Ji said— I, Vishnu, Brahma and Shankar are your children.
■ Shrimad Devi Bhagavata Purana 3rd Skandh Adhyay 4 Sloka 42:
Brahma Aham Maheshwarh fil te prabhawatsarve vyam jani na yada tu nityah, Ke anye surah shatmakh pramukhah ch nitya nitya twamev janani Prakritih Purana (42)
Mahashivratri 2020
Oh, Mother! Brahma, I, (Vishnu), and Shiva take birth from your influence only, we are not eternal/immortal, then how can other Indra, etc. gods be eternal. Only you are immortal, Prakriti and Sanatani Devi.
Mahashivratri 2020-It has been said in the Sukshma Veda
Kabir, patthar pooje Hari mile, to main poojun pahaad|
Mahashivratri 2020
Taaten to chakkee bhalee, pees khae sansaar||
Kabir, Ved padhe par bhed na jaane, baanchen puraan athaarah|
Mahashivratri 2020
patthar kee pooja kare, bhule Sirjanhara||
■ God Kabir Ji says in the above-written Couplets— If God is attained by worshipping stones(idols), then I will worship mountains. But there is no evidence of all this in the Vedas. They read Vedas and narrate stories from Puranas, but forgetting the Creator, they are themselves practicing idol worship.
Fasting (Vart) during Mahashivratri 2020
Fasting (Vart) is considered the most crucial observance for any Hindu festival. But, Holy Books also prohibit it. In Geeta Ji Adhyay 6 Sloka 16, it is written that a person who does not eat at all, i.e., fasts, never succeeds in her/his worship.
The Ignorant gurus even do the Path of Geeta Ji and still advise fasting. They have misled the devotee society.
Mahashivratri 2020-God Kabir says in His Sukshma Veda
Guruva gaam bigaade Santon, guruva gaam bigaade|
Mahashivratri 2020
Aise karm jeev ke la die, bahur jhade na jhaade||
Conclusion of Mahashivratri
From the above-written information, it is clear that whatever way of worship is prevalent today for Mahashivratri does not comply with the injunctions of Holy Books. It is proved Shiva / Shankar is not the Supreme God. He is perishable and takes birth and dies. His mother is Durga and his father is Kaal, who is also known as Sadashiva or Jyoti Niranjan Kaal. His worship in the Scriptures is said to be futile.
At present, there is only one Great Saint, who tells the way of worship and the spiritual Knowledge according to the Holy Scriptures. By reading the books written by him, people found a new and ideal Way of Living and the correct way of Worship. His name is Jagatguru Tatvadarshi Saint Rampal Ji Maharaj.
