National Panchayati Raj Day 2026 Celebrates Grassroots Democracy
India is observing National Panchayati Raj Day on April 24, 2026, highlighting local self-governance and grassroots democracy. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj said the national event is being held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, and that the day marks 33 years since the 73rd Constitutional Amendment gave constitutional status and legal recognition to Panchayati Raj Institutions across India.
Why April 24 Matters
National Panchayati Raj Day is observed every year on April 24 because it commemorates the implementation of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, which came into force in 1993. The amendment gave Panchayati Raj Institutions constitutional status and placed Panchayat-related provisions in Part IX of the Constitution.
National Event at Vigyan Bhawan
According to PIB, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj is celebrating the national event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The Prime Minister’s message is being read out, and it is also being disseminated among elected representatives and functionaries of Panchayati Raj Institutions and rural local bodies through State and UT departments.

Panchayat Advancement Index and Heritage Publications
This year’s event includes the launch of the Panchayat Advancement Index 2.0 and three illustrated publications under the Panchayat Dharohar Initiative. These publications focus on rural heritage in Tripura, Tirupati and Uttarkashi, linking governance with local culture and heritage preservation.
Panchayats as the Backbone of Rural Democracy
PIB stated that Panchayati Raj Institutions form the backbone of India’s grassroots democracy. India has more than 2.5 lakh Panchayats and around 24.04 lakh elected representatives, with women forming approximately 49.75% of them. This shows how local governance has become more inclusive and representative.
Gram Sabha: People’s Direct Platform
The Gram Sabha is the most direct form of democracy in rural India because it brings registered voters together to discuss development, expenditure, plans and local problems. It gives villagers a platform to question, approve, monitor and participate in governance. This makes democracy visible at the ground level.
Digital Governance Strengthens Villages
PIB highlighted digital platforms such as eGramSwaraj, Meri Panchayat, Panchayat NIRNAY, AuditOnline, SVAMITVA, Gram Manchitra and other tools that improve transparency and efficiency. Digital tools can help villages track funds, land records, meetings, planning and service delivery more effectively.
True Service Begins at the Grassroots
Grassroots governance becomes meaningful only when honesty, compassion and public service guide decision-making. Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj’s social reform platform highlights honesty, transparency, relief work and true spiritual knowledge as foundations for a better society. These values naturally connect with clean, accountable and people-centred local governance.
Call to Action
Citizens should attend Gram Sabha meetings, ask questions about local funds, support women representatives, and work for clean, corruption-free villages. Strong panchayats can become the foundation of a truly developed India.
