Hurricane Beryl Storming Towards Jamaica

Since the beginning of this weekend, Hurricane Beryl has been intensified into a category 5 storm in no time and has devastated parts of the caribbean. Although governments have issued warnings to the people still there is nothing much people can do about it. Now the hurricane is headed over to Jamaica and it lies right on its path, warnings have been issued to Jamaica as well. Read the news to know about it in detail.

Hurricane Beryl Highlights 

  • Hurricane Beryl has killed six people, injuring several while destroying islands in the caribbean.
  • The hurricane has headed over to Jamaica as a category 4 storm which can still be considered as a dangerous hurricane.

Where is Hurricane Beryl heading?

  • Hurricane Beryl has turned into a dangerous category 4 storm and is heading towards Jamaica. The storm has already crossed islands in the southeast of the Caribbean.
  • Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac have been issued hurricane warnings.
  • Although Hurricane Beryl is deintensifying still it will be a dangerous hurricane when it will pass through Jamaica on Wednesday, Cayman Islands on Thursday and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Friday.

How did Hurricane Beryl intensified?

  • Scientists say that climate change is the major cause of its intensification. 
  • Christopher Rozoff an atmospheric scientist at the US Based National Centre for Atmospheric Research said that Global warming has pushed sea’s temperatures to go high. 
  • Higher temperatures further help in more evaporation and thus intensifying hurricanes.

What is the damage being done by the hurricane?

  • Before heading towards Jamaica Hurricane Beryl has devastated the South Eastern Caribbean killing at least six people there.
  • Three people were killed in Grenada and Carriacou, one was killed in Grenadines and St.Vincent. Two deaths were reported in Northern Venezuela. 
  • Five people are reported to be missing from Northern Venezuela. Approximately 25,000 people are also affected by heavy rains in that area.
  • An island on the Grenadines Archipelago has been 90% destroyed in complete manners.

Atlantic Hurricane Facts

  • Andra Garner, a Rowan University Meteorologist said that Hurricane Beryl jumped from Category 1 to Category 4 storm in just 10 hours. It is the fastest intensification ever recorded before September, the season of Atlantic hurricanes.
  • Hurricane Beryl- the earliest to reach category 5, highest on Saffir Simpson scale.
  • On Tuesday when the storm was 480 km east southeast of Kingston, it had winds of upto 250 kmph and it was moving towards west-northwest at a speed of 35 kph.
  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted an average of between 17 to 25 storms in the year 2024.
  • Amongst it was 13 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes.
  • 14 storms, 7 hurricanes and three major hurricanes are produced by an average Atlantic season.

Official Statements and Warnings for Jamaica

  • Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said “I urge all Jamaicans to stock up on food, batteries, candles, and water. Secure your critical documents and remove any trees or items that could endanger your property,”
  • He further wrote “Everyone, including those living alone, should take these necessary steps now,”
  • “It’s better to be prepared than to regret not preparing.”
  • Michael Brennan, the director of the National Hurricane Centre said “We are most concerned about Jamaica, where we are expecting the core of a major hurricane to pass near or over the island,”
  • He further said “You want to be in a safe place where you can ride out the storm by nightfall [on Tuesday]. Be prepared to stay in that location through Wednesday.”
  • Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said about the situation in Grenada “The situation is grim,” “There is no power and there is almost complete destruction of homes and buildings on the island. The roads are not passable, and in many instances, they are cut off because of the large quantity of debris strewn all over the streets.”
  • He further added “The possibility that there may be more fatalities remains a grim reality as movement is still highly restricted.”
