Preeti Sudan Steps Up As The New Chairperson of UPSC

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will be chaired by Preeti Sudan as the new chairperson. Sudan worked as the Union Health Secretary earlier and will take charge as the new chairperson on 1st August, 2024. Her appointment comes after her predecessor Mr. Manoj Soni resigned from his position. Both the resignation and the appointment has been approved by the President of India Droupadi Murmu. • Preeti Sudan is set to take the office as the new chairperson of the UPSC from 1st August, 2024.

• She joined as a member of UPSC in November 2022.

• She is the 2nd woman after RM Bathew who was the chairperson of the UPSC from 1992 to 1996.

• She has been given the appointment under section 316 clause (1A) of the Indian Constitution after the resignation of his predecessor.

The appointment letter reads, “Hon’ble President has approved the appointment of Preeti Sudan, Member, UPSC under clause (1A) of the Article 316 of the Constitution for performing the duties of Chairman, UPSC with effect from 1st August, 2024, till further orders or till April 29, 2025, whichever is earlier,”

Who is Preeti Sudan?

• Preeti Sudan is an IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh Cadre of 1983 batch.

• Additionally she also has a postgraduate degree in Economics (M.Phil) and Social Policy and Planning (M.Sc.) from LSE.

• She has 37 years of work experience in various administrative departments of the Government of India (GOI).

Preeti Sudan: Work Experience 

• Before retirement, she served as a Union Health Secretary for three years, whose last six months were during the COVID-19 pandemic.

• She also worked as a Consultant with the World Bank. She served as chair of COP-8 of Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. 

• She also served as the Vice Chair of Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, Child Health Chair of Global Digital Health Partnership.

• She also served as an independent member of WHO’s independent panel of Pandemic Preparedness and Response.

• She was also a member of the Union Public Service Commission from November 29, 2022.

Who is Manoj Soni?

• Manoj Soni, UPSC chairperson resigned from his position due to his personal reasons.

• He joined as a member of UPSC on 28 June 2017. And appointed as the chairperson of UPSC and took oath on May 16, 2023, he had his tenure as the chairperson upto 15 May 2029.
